Gwyneth Paltrow reveals her insecurities

Gwyneth Paltrow was worried she would never make another film after taking time out to have children, she said.

"I really did not know if there would be a place for me any more," the 35-year-old actress said.

"Hollywood is pretty cut-throat and everybody's got a short memory and there's always somebody younger, or hotter or prettier."

The actress is in Cannes to launch Two Lovers, a romantic drama co-starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Paltrow, who is married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin, also spoke about her role in blockbuster comic book adaptation Iron Man.

She said a sequel was likely after the success of the film, which has topped both the UK and the US box office.

"The experiences of working with Robert Downey Jr was once in a lifetime - well, now twice because we get to make another Iron Man," she said.

Tragic comedy

Two Lovers walks a fine line between romantic comedy and tragedy as it tells the tale of two broken, troubled adults and their tangled relationship.

Phoenix plays Leonard, a photographer who moves back to his parents' home after his marriage is called off.

He falls in love with his neighbour, Michelle - played by Paltrow - an attractive woman dating a married man.

Meanwhile, Leonard's parents try to set him up with another woman whose father is buying their family business.

A film which starts with the lead character attempting suicide will never develop into a rambunctious comedy, but the story also has its lighter moments.

"I did intend for a lot of the film to be funny," admits director James Gray.

"It is very difficult to tell a love story with a serious intent because it's almost a heightened state of delirium.

"When you're first in love that it lends itself to people acting in insane ways."

Vinessa Shaw, whose character Sandra is one side of the film's love triangle, agrees.

"When you're falling in lust and love there's always awkward moments and humorous encounters because you're never quite yourself.

"The script lent itself to that but I think in a romantic comedy it could go to an extreme. There is no guffawing and goofiness."

Oscar nomination

Director Gray said he had written the script with Pheonix and Paltrow in mind, but had not anticipated the effect the presence of Isabella Rosselini (who plays Leonard's mother) would have on the film-making process.

"She was very, very bad for me on the set because I just wanted to ask her every question I had about Roberto Rosselini," he joked.

"I loved her, but it was very bad for my work ethic."

Phoenix was unable to attend the premiere in Cannes, added Gray, because he had been hospitalised with viral gastroenteritis.

"I spoke to him just after I arrived in Cannes and he was like, 'dude, I'm throwing up'."

The actor, who won an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in Walk The Line, had still wanted to fly to the festival, but his director implored him to see a doctor.

"Sadly, he followed my advice and they put him in the hospital," he said.

Phoenix sent a message to the festival saying he was "very disappointed" not to attend.
